  1. My first two years of teaching, my third grade was departmentalized into reading/social studies and math/science. The students went to two teachers each day. This year, we chose to teach self-contained and have the same students all day, every day. From the teacher's perspective, I feel like I get much more teaching done on a flexible schedule. I also feel like I know the needs of my students much better. I favor self-contained in elementary, but it would interesting the see the pros and cons in secondary.

  2. Being an elementary teacher, I don't have any first hand experience with secondary scheduling issues. I've learned more about it in the past three weeks from reading discussion board posts and blog pages. I'm interested in the results of your project. I really can't think of any benefits to the 7/55 schedule. I teach 5th grade ELAR. Even though we are departmentalized, there are only 3 of us and our rooms are right next to one another, so it's not the same as secondary. I teach 3 80 minute blocks. I would have a hard time being effective in 55 minutes. I look forward to seeing what you find out.
